Comparing bills between nations is not quite like for like. Scottish bills have no police precept,
because police and fire are funded centrally there, and water and sewerage are charged separately by
Scottish Water. Welsh bills include a police precept and usually a community council precept.

## How are these figures worked out?



England and Scotland publish every band directly, so those are the councils' own figures. Wales
publishes Band D only, so the other bands are derived from it using the statutory ratios, which are
set in law and identical for every Welsh authority. Pages for Welsh areas say so.



The band ratios differ by nation. England and Wales work in ninths: Band A pays two-thirds of Band D
and the top band twice it. Scotland used the same ratios until 2017, when the multipliers for bands E
to H were raised, so expensive Scottish homes now pay relatively more. Wales has a ninth band, Band I,
added at its 2003 revaluation.
