# Crime where you live

Last updated 29 September 2026.
Figures refresh every night. [How each figure is worked out](/methodology/).

In the 12 months to June 2026, police forces recorded **82.4 crimes per 1,000 residents in England** and 81.3 in Wales, excluding anti-social behaviour. Northern Ireland’s police record crime under the same rules, and are on the same scale. Scotland counts crime under its own rules and in its own groups, so its figures are not comparable with England’s and Wales’s: Scotland 56.9 (total crimes recorded (groups 1 to 5) per 1,000 residents, April 2025 to March 2026). The map goes from each police force area down to small areas of about 1,500 people, with every figure a rate per resident, from police.uk's own records.

**Scotland**: Total crimes recorded (groups 1 to 5) per 1,000 residents, April 2025 to March 2026

- One area: its own figure, with nothing else in Scotland to shade it against

Scotland: **56.9**

A higher figure is worse.

Tap or hover over an area, pick one in the table, or search by name or postcode, to see its figures here.

With a keyboard: tab to the map, then use the arrow keys to move between areas, Enter to pick one or look inside it, Escape to go back to the wider view, and + or − to zoom.

Pick an area, then “Look inside” to see the areas within it: police force area, council, neighbourhood (MSOA) and
small area (LSOA). Zooming in far enough over an area does the same. Pinch or use + and − to zoom; on a phone the page
scrolls normally until you zoom in.

## How are these figures counted?

police.uk publishes every crime and anti-social behaviour incident the forces of England, Wales and Northern Ireland
record, month by month. Each is placed at an anonymous point near where it happened, and tagged with the small area
(LSOA) it falls in. This map counts those records for July 2025 to June 2026, the
latest twelve months every force still publishing has supplied, and divides by the ONS’s estimate of the people living in
each area in mid-2024.

3.7%
of police.uk’s records (215,703) could not be placed. They count towards their force’s figure only. Northern Ireland’s records on police.uk carry no place at all, so its council figures come from the PSNI’s own tables instead.

- **Every level is a sum of small areas.** A neighbourhood’s rate is its small areas’ records over their residents; a council’s is its neighbourhoods’; a force area’s is its councils’. Nothing is estimated or spread down from a larger area.
- **Rates, never counts.** Areas differ in size, so every figure is per 1,000 residents. A rate per resident runs high where few people live but many visit, such as city centres and shopping streets.
- **Nothing is suppressed.** police.uk protects victims by moving each record to an anonymous point rather than hiding small numbers, so a zero is a real zero.
- **How the small areas are named.** The ONS numbers neighbourhoods (MSOAs) and small areas (LSOAs) within their council (“Sefton 017”, “Sefton 017C”) and gives them no names. Neighbourhoods here carry the House of Commons Library’s names for them, with the ONS number beside. Small areas have no name from anyone, so each is shown by its neighbourhood’s name and its own number, with the postcode sectors most of its postcodes are in; sectors seldom follow small-area borders, so those are approximate.
- **Stop and search** is tied to a force but not to a place, so it is shown for each police force area only. Looking inside a force with it chosen keeps the force shaded as one.

## Which areas have no figure, and why?

Where a force has not supplied every month, its areas show no rate rather than one that would be too low:

| Force | Months supplied | On the map |
| --- | --- | --- |
| GloucestershireDetails | 7 of 12 | Incomplete |
| On the mapIncomplete | | |
| Greater ManchesterDetails | 0 of 12 | Force-wide figure from the Home Office; smaller areas not published |
| On the mapForce-wide figure from the Home Office; smaller areas not published | | |

**Greater Manchester** has published nothing to police.uk since 2019, but still reports its recorded crime
to the Home Office, which publishes every force’s figures each quarter. The map uses those for the force as a whole,
marked “(Home Office)”: the same crimes, counted under the same rules.

97% to 103%
police.uk’s count as a share of the Home Office’s, for nine in ten of the 42 forces on both, over the 12 months to June 2025. Within 5% for 38.

The Home Office figures cover the force and nothing smaller, so Greater Manchester’s councils and neighbourhoods
stay “not published”, as does its anti-social behaviour, which they do not count. They run a quarter or two behind
police.uk, so the force’s panel on the map says which twelve months it shows.

### Scotland

Police Scotland does not publish to police.uk. The Scottish Government publishes crimes recorded by the police in each council area, under the Scottish Crime Recording Standard, grouped its own way.
The map shows Scotland’s own figures for April 2025 to March 2026, per 1,000 residents, on a scale of their own: they
count different things from police.uk’s, so they are not set against England’s and Wales’s. Its groups:

| Group | What it covers |
| --- | --- |
| Total crimes | All crimes recorded by the police in groups 1 to 5 of the Scottish Crime Recording Standard; offences (groups 6 to 8) are counted separately. |
| Non-sexual crimes of violence | Group 1: homicide, serious assault and attempted murder, robbery, common assault, domestic abuse under the 2018 Act and other violence. |
| Sexual crimes | Group 2: rape and attempted rape, sexual assault, and other sexual crimes, including those committed online. |
| Crimes of dishonesty | Group 3: housebreaking, theft, shoplifting, theft of and from motor vehicles, fraud and other dishonesty. |
| Housebreaking | Theft by housebreaking, including attempts and housebreaking with intent, from homes, other buildings and other premises (part of group 3). |
| Theft of a motor vehicle | Theft of a motor vehicle, including attempts (part of group 3). |
| Theft from a motor vehicle | Theft from a motor vehicle, including attempts (part of group 3). |
| Damage and reckless behaviour | Group 4: vandalism, fire-raising and reckless conduct. |
| Vandalism | Wilful or reckless destruction of or damage to property, including malicious mischief (part of group 4). |
| Fire-raising | Wilful or culpable and reckless fire-raising (part of group 4). |
| Crimes against society | Group 5: crimes against public justice, drugs supply and possession, and possessing or using weapons. |
| Total offences | All offences recorded by the police in groups 6 to 8: anti-social, miscellaneous and road traffic offences, which Scotland counts apart from crimes. |
| Antisocial offences | Group 6: threatening and abusive behaviour, hate-aggravated conduct, drunkenness and disorderly conduct, and urinating in public. |
| Miscellaneous offences | Group 7: community and public order, environmental, licensing, wildlife and other offences. |
| Road traffic offences | Group 8: dangerous and careless driving, driving under the influence, speeding, unlawful use of a vehicle and other motoring offences. |
| Anti-social behaviour incidents (public reported) | Incidents the public reported to Police Scotland that were classed as anti-social behaviour, from Police Scotland management information; these are incidents, not crimes. |
| Stop and search | Searches of people not in police custody that Police Scotland officers carried out under a statutory power or a warrant, by the council area where each took place. |

### Northern Ireland

The PSNI publishes crimes it records in each of its eleven policing districts, which are the eleven councils, in its own offence groups.
The PSNI records crime under the same Home Office Counting Rules as the forces of England and Wales, and police.uk holds
the same records (the totals agree to within about 3%) but places none of them in an area. So the map shows the PSNI’s
council figures for September 2025 to August 2026 on England’s and Wales’s scale, per 1,000 residents; only stop
and search, which the PSNI counts differently, is on a scale of its own. Its groups:

| Group | What it covers |
| --- | --- |
| Total police recorded crime | Every crime PSNI recorded under the Home Office Counting Rules; fraud reported to Action Fraud is not included. |
| Violence against the person | Homicide, violence with injury, violence without injury, and stalking and harassment. |
| Sexual offences | Rape and other sexual offences. |
| Robbery | Robbery of personal property and of business property. |
| Theft offences | Burglary, vehicle offences, theft from the person, bicycle theft, shoplifting and all other theft. |
| Burglary | Residential burglary and business and community burglary (part of theft offences). |
| Vehicle offences | Theft of or from a vehicle, aggravated vehicle taking and interfering with a vehicle (part of theft offences). |
| Criminal damage | Criminal damage and arson. |
| Drug offences | Trafficking of controlled drugs and possession of drugs. |
| Possession of weapons offences | Possessing firearms, knives, offensive weapons and other weapons. |
| Public order offences | Offences causing fear, alarm or distress, and other public order offences. |
| Miscellaneous crimes against society | Other crimes against society, such as perverting the course of justice, handling stolen goods and bail offences. |
| Anti-social behaviour incidents | Incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to PSNI, recorded under the National Standard for Incident Recording; these are incidents, not crimes. |
| Persons stopped and searched or questioned | People stopped and searched or questioned by PSNI under any power, including PACE, the Misuse of Drugs Act, the Terrorism Act and the Justice and Security Act. |

## Common questions

Why does Greater Manchester have only one figure?
Greater Manchester Police stopped supplying police.uk in 2019. The Home Office still publishes its recorded crime for the force as a whole, so that is the figure shown, marked “(Home Office)”. The areas inside it are marked “not published”, not zero. Why can I not see stop and search for my neighbourhood?
police.uk ties stop and search to a police force, not to a small area, so it is published for each police force area only. The map keeps the force shaded as one area rather than repeat its figure across the areas inside it.Why is the town centre rate so high?
Rates are per resident. A town or city centre has few residents and many visitors, workers and shops, so crime recorded there is divided by a small number of people.
