Which files can you download?

• latest.json — everything the pages render, in one file
• status.json — last night's run: every source and its state
• litre-decomposition.csv — the weekly split of the pump price into crude, margin, duty and VAT
• accountability.json — every council report card, the county councils’ figures, the national comparison figures and the sources behind them
• council-report-cards.csv — one row per council: council tax, complaints, reserves, borrowing, audit status, ratings and flags
• maps/council-map/map.json and maps/council-map/topo/lad.json — the figures and boundaries the council map draws
• maps/crime/map.json — the crime map’s measures and every police force area’s rates; the council, MSOA and LSOA rates are under /data/maps/crime/<period>/, one file per council for the small areas
• when-it-goes-wrong.json — major projects, reports, losses, fraud estimates, MPs’ costs and contract awards

CSV files carry the same information as comment lines above the header, so a file that gets passed around still says where it came from.

Whose are the figures?

The figures are not ours and our licence does not cover them. They belong to the bodies that published them and are used under those bodies' terms. Most are Crown copyright under the Open Government Licence; the rest are below. Every CSV and JSON file names its publisher and that publisher's licence, and every page's source table shows the licence for each source.

Which sources are linked, not republished?

These publishers' terms do not allow their data to be republished, or do not clearly allow it. Their figures are quoted on the pages with a link to the original, and are left out of the downloads and bulk files.

When do the files update?

The pipeline runs at 02:00 UTC every night. Files only change when the data does, so a quiet night leaves no diff. Each source publishes on its own schedule: DESNZ pump prices weekly on a Monday or Tuesday, Brent and the exchange rate daily on working days, Ofgem quarterly, the IEA comparison tables annually and about two years in arrears. The status page shows what happened last night.

How do you embed a live figure?

Every page has an embeddable widget showing that page's headline figure. Paste the iframe from the "use this data" box at the bottom of the page. The widget is a static HTML file regenerated on every run, sets no cookies, loads no scripts from anywhere else, and links back to the page it came from.
